Giving to the Helping Hands Fund
There is a major misconception that all "homeless" people are drug addicts or alcoholics, when in fact the largest percentage of homeless today are single parents (usually mothers with children) trying to keep the family together while working and/or going to school. Other major causes of homelessness are sickness, accidents, job loss, divorce or other unexpected events. Children, who comprise one third of the homeless population, often suffer from these catastrophic life-changing events.
The Helping Hands Fund was created to empower people to help themselves through education. The primary recipients of these funds are homeless persons or persons at risk of becoming homeless who are enrolled in programs under the supervision of San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries (SAMM) or Haven for Hope. Disbursements are made for academic scholarships, job training, and any other expense related to the pursuit of education, vocational training, and requirements for licensing and/or accreditation.
100% of donations received by the fund go directly to recipients, since operating costs are covered by our generous team of directors. Our disbursements to SAMM and Haven to date have been:
